EntryTown free; lift tickets charged

Telluride sits at the closed end of a box canyon with walls rising several hundred metres on three sides, which means the road in is also the road out. Silver and gold built it from the 1870s; Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank here in 1889. The whole town is a National Historic Landmark District. A free public gondola, opened in 1996, links the town to Mountain Village over the ridge in about thirteen minutes and runs into the small hours - it is part of the transit system, not a lift ticket, and is the only free gondola of its kind in the country. Bridal Veil Falls at the canyon head drops about a hundred and twenty metres, the tallest free-falling waterfall in Colorado.

What you actually see

  • A box canyon with one road in - walls on three sides.
  • A free public gondola - part of the transit system, running late.
  • A whole-town historic district - from the mining decades.
  • Bridal Veil Falls - about 120 metres at the canyon head.

When to go

December to March for skiing; June to September for festivals and hiking. Several days.

Honest expectations

Access is a long drive from any airport with reliable service. It is expensive. Festival weekends fill the town completely. Altitude at 2,660 metres is significant.

Nearby

Ouray is north over the mountains; Mesa Verde is south-west.
