Hilton Head Island
A Lowcountry island developed from 1956 under design rules that hide buildings and signs behind trees, and Gullah land that predates it.

Charles Fraser began developing Sea Pines in 1956 with an approach unusual for the period: buildings kept low and set behind trees, signage restricted in size and colour, roads curved rather than gridded, and mature trees protected - rules the island has broadly kept, so it reads as woodland with buildings in it rather than a resort strip. There are around a hundred kilometres of cycle paths. Golf is central, with the Harbour Town course hosting a PGA event beneath a candy-striped lighthouse built as a marketing folly in 1970. The island also has Gullah Geechee communities descended from enslaved people who bought land after the Civil War; that land has been under sustained pressure from development and taxation, which is a live local issue.

Good to know
Much of the island is gated communities with restricted access. Beach parking is limited and charged. Summer heat, humidity and insects are heavy. It is expensive.
