Carhenge

Jim Reinders had lived in England and studied Stonehenge, and when the family gathered in 1987 for a memorial to his father they built this on the farm where he had lived - thirty-nine vehicles, some buried boot-down in the ground as uprights, others welded across the top as lintels, the whole thing to the proportions of the original and spray-painted grey. Reinders gave the ten-acre site to the Friends of Carhenge, who handed it to the citizens of Alliance in 2013. Additional sculptures made from car parts stand in the field around it. It sits in open prairie with nothing else in view, and it was directly in the path of totality for the 2017 solar eclipse.

Good to know

It is one thing in a field - the visit is short. There is no shelter. Winter wind on the plains is severe. It is a long drive from anywhere.
