Cerne Abbas Giant

The giant is a naked male figure fifty-five metres tall holding a knotted club, cut as chalk-filled trenches on a steep hillside above the village, and he is famous mainly for his very large and unmissable erection, which is about eleven metres and was probably joined to a separate navel at some point in his history. His age was argued over for centuries: candidates included an Iron Age god, a Roman Hercules and a seventeenth-century political satire aimed at Cromwell, the last supported by the absence of any documentary mention before 1694. Optically stimulated luminescence dating of the chalk layers, published in 2021, put his creation between roughly 700 and 1100 AD, late Saxon, which surprised nearly everyone and left open why an abbey was founded next to him.

When to go

April to October for the clearest light on the chalk; the figure is scoured and rechalked periodically and looks brightest afterward. It faces east, so morning light is best.

Honest expectations

The figure can only be seen properly from the viewpoint across the valley, and walking on the hillside is prohibited to protect it, so there is nothing to do but look. The layby is small. Local folklore about fertility is modern and not evidenced.
