Al Zorah Nature Reserve

Al Zorah is a lagoon and mangrove system on the northern edge of Ajman, part protected and part built around with a marina and golf course. The mangrove holds a resident flamingo population that stays through the year rather than only wintering, along with herons, egrets and around sixty other recorded species. Kayaks and paddleboards go out through the channels from a launch point at the edge, and the water is shallow and sheltered enough for beginners.

What you actually see

• The resident flamingos - a population present through the year rather than only in winter.
• The kayak channels - shallow sheltered water winding through the mangrove.
• The birdlife - herons, egrets and waders using the lagoon and flats.
• The mangrove stand - grey mangrove growing along the tidal creeks.

When to go

October to April is most comfortable; flamingos are present all year. Early morning is best for birds and calm water. Tides govern where kayaks can go.

Honest expectations

Development around the lagoon has taken some of the habitat and the setting is not wild. Kayak rental must usually be booked. There is no formal visitor centre or trail network.
