Getting thereAbout 70 km north of Ternopil in the Kremenets hills
EntryFree; small charges at museums

Kremenets lies in a valley between chalk hills, with the ruins of a castle on the steep Bona mount directly above the town, held to have never been taken until the Cossack wars of the seventeenth century. Below it, the former Jesuit college and then Volhynian Lyceum forms a large Baroque complex around a church, one of the finest ensembles in the region. The poet Juliusz Slowacki was born here and his house is a museum.

What you actually see

  • Bona mount - castle ruins on the steep hill directly above the town.
  • The lyceum complex - the Baroque former college and its church.
  • The Slowacki house - the poet's birthplace, run as a museum.
  • The chalk hills - the Kremenets ridge with walking routes above the valley.

When to go

April to October is the comfortable season. The climb to the castle is best in the morning. Museums close on Mondays.

Honest expectations

The climb to Bona mount is steep and the ruins are fragmentary. Parts of the lyceum complex are in institutional use and closed. The town itself is workaday.

Nearby

Pochaiv is northwest, and Vyshnivets is east.
