Reserved with strangers but deeply hospitable once greeted; feeding a guest well is a point of honour.
✓ Considered polite
- Take your shoes off when entering a home - slippers are usually offered at the door
- Bring a small gift when invited over - sweets, wine or flowers in odd numbers only
- Accept offered food and tea - a token portion pleases a host more than a polite refusal
- Learn a few Ukrainian words - dobryi den and dyakuyu are noticed and warmly returned
✗ Better avoided
- Shake hands or pass things across a threshold - superstition says it invites a quarrel
- Give an even number of flowers - even counts are for funerals
- Whistle indoors - folk wisdom says it whistles the money away
- Mistake an unsmiling face for rudeness - warmth arrives once you are acquainted
Worth knowing
- Card and phone payments are near-universal, down to market stalls and taxis
- Tipping around 10% in restaurants is appreciated but not demanded
- Coffee culture is serious - tiny espresso kiosks appear on almost every corner
- Intercity trains are cheap and punctual - book sleeper berths a few days ahead
