Dnipro

Dnipro sits on a wide bend of the river and has built its public life along the water: the embankment runs for kilometres and is among the longest river promenades in Europe. The city was closed to foreigners in the Soviet period because it built rockets, and the Yuzhmash works and a space museum remain from that. The Transfiguration cathedral of 1830 stands on the hill, and the historical museum holds a notable collection of stone steppe figures.

Background

Ukraine's fourth-largest city lies on the Dnipro River, which gives it its name, 391 km southeast of Kyiv, and had an estimated 968,502 residents in 2022. Archaeological evidence points to Cossack communities on the site from at least 1524, while the official founding date of 1526 refers to Stara Samar. Catherine the Great established the town by decree in 1787 as Yekaterinoslav, meaning glory of Catherine. From the end of the 19th century, foreign capital and workers came to exploit Kryvbas iron ore and Donbas coal. The city was renamed Dnipropetrovsk in 1926 and Dnipro in 2016. It covers 409.718 km², spread over 8 districts, at an elevation of 155 m.

When to go

May to September is the best for the embankment and the river. Museums close on Mondays. Winters are cold with wind off the water.

The city is spread out and sights are far apart. Much of the centre is Soviet-era fabric. Museum labelling is in Ukrainian.

Petrykivka is northwest, and Khortytsia is downstream at Zaporizhzhia.
