Mount Moroto

Mount Moroto - Moru To, the western mountain - rises to 3,083 metres about three kilometres east of Moroto town in Karamoja, an extinct volcano whose slopes carry dry montane forest that is a habitat island in an otherwise semi-arid landscape. The climb takes a long day or is broken over two, passing through the forest reserve to a rocky summit with views over the Karamoja plains and into Kenya. Guides are arranged in town and the Tepeth community lives on the mountain's slopes; the forest reserve around it covers some 483 square kilometres and holds more than 220 bird species.

When to go

June to September and December to March are the drier windows. Early starts are needed for the long climb. Nights on the mountain are cold.

Before you go

There is no formal trekking infrastructure and everything is arranged informally in Moroto. The climb is long and steep with no water on the route. Karamoja is remote and journeys there are long.
