Getting thereIn the northern group; ship from Funafuti, around a day and a half

Niutao is one of the islands in Tuvalu that is not a proper atoll: the ring closed up long ago, leaving two brackish ponds in the middle of the land with no connection to the sea, and the island around them is solid rather than a chain of islets. Around six hundred people live there. Landing is through the reef by boat because there is no lagoon to enter. Land here is a little higher than on the atolls, though still only a few metres above the sea.

What you actually see

  • The enclosed ponds - brackish water with no connection to the sea.
  • The closed ring - solid land where other islands have a lagoon.
  • The reef landing - boats coming in through the surf line.
  • The village - the settlement of around six hundred people.

When to go

May to October is drier and calmer. Landings depend entirely on the surf. November to April is the cyclone season.

Honest expectations

Landing through the reef is often impossible and ships turn away. Sailings from Funafuti are infrequent. There is no accommodation beyond community arrangements.

Nearby

Nanumaga is northwest, and Nui is south.
