Balfour Town

Balfour Town is the only settlement on Salt Cay and holds around a hundred people, a scatter of buildings among the old salt pans that were the island's whole economy until the trade collapsed in the mid-twentieth century. Bermudian-style houses, windmill remains, the White House and the pans themselves survive largely as they were. Donkeys wander the streets. Salt Cay was once the largest salt producer in the territory and the pans covered most of the island's interior.

When to go

December to April is the dry high season and the whale watching window. Many businesses close in the low season. Ferries are weather-dependent.

Honest expectations

Almost everything closes outside the winter season. Ferries are cancelled in weather and the island is very small. Facilities are minimal.
