Konye-Urgench

Konye-Urgench was Gurganj, capital of Khorezm and one of the medieval world's great cities - praised by travellers as the finest in Central Asia before the Mongols drowned and razed it in 1221, and again before Timur finished the job. What the catastrophes left stands scattered across a steppe field: the Kutlug Timur minaret leaning its sixty-odd metres of patterned brick into the sky, the conical turquoise dome of the Turabek Khanum mausoleum with its dazzling geometric ceiling, and the tomb towers of sultans and saints that pilgrims still circle. UNESCO inscribed the ensemble in 2005; the emptiness between the monuments is the exhibit - a metropolis reduced to punctuation.

• Turabek Khanum mausoleum - the ceiling of interlocking stars.
• The sultans' tombs - Tekesh and Il-Arslan's conical-domed mausoleums.
• The pilgrim paths - worn circuits and wish-cradles among the graves.

When to go

April to June and September to October dodge the steppe's furnace and freezer. Morning light models the brickwork; pilgrims give the site its living dimension on Fridays.

Honest expectations

The monuments are magnificent but dispersed - expect walking between islands of brick in open, shadeless ground, with interpretation minimal. Turkmen travel logistics (visas, guides, transit permits) are the real entry fee and need arranging well ahead. Respect the active pilgrimage: this is sacred ground first, sightseeing second.
