Getting thereAt Tagtabazar in the far south near the Afghan border; road from Mary
EntrySmall fee

Ekedeshik is a complex of chambers and passages cut by hand into a soft rock hillside above the Murgab near Tagtabazar, running over several levels with rooms, corridors and openings to the outside, and its date and purpose are argued about: a refuge, a monastery and a caravanserai have all been proposed. The name means single hole, for the one entrance. It is unlit and unmarked and a torch is essential.

What you actually see

  • The cut chambers - rooms and passages hand-carved into the soft rock.
  • The multiple levels - the complex running over several storeys inside the hill.
  • The single entrance - the one opening that gives the site its name.
  • The Murgab valley - the river country the hillside overlooks.

When to go

April to May and September to October are the comfortable months. Summer heat outside is extreme, though the caves stay cool. Border zone permits may apply.

Honest expectations

The site is near a sensitive border and permits are often required. It is unlit and unmarked; a torch is essential and there is no guiding. Passages are low and dusty.

Nearby

Badkhyz is east, and Mary is north.
