Gobekli Tepe

Gobekli Tepe rewrote the story of civilisation: on a limestone ridge in the Germus hills near Sanliurfa, hunter-gatherers raised circles of carved T-shaped pillars - some five and a half metres tall, alive with foxes, snakes, boars and cranes - between 9600 and 8200 BC, making these the oldest known monumental structures on earth, some six millennia before Stonehenge. No one lived here in the ordinary sense; the enclosures appear to have served ritual and gathering, which upended the old assumption that only settled farmers build monuments - here, monument-building may have come first. Excavation since the 1990s has exposed only a fraction of the mound, UNESCO listed the site in 2018, and a great canopy roof now floats over the enclosures, its walkways circling pillars that had already stood for seven millennia when Egypt's pyramids rose.

When to go

Spring and autumn are kind; July and August push far past 40 C on the shadeless ridge - go at opening if summer is unavoidable. The site pairs naturally with a half day in Sanliurfa's old town and museum.

Honest expectations

You view from walkways above the enclosures - there is no walking among the pillars, and the protective roof frames every photo. Interpretation is still evolving, so bring curiosity rather than certainty; seeing the museum first helps enormously. It is a taxi or tour ride from Sanliurfa.
