Tamezret

Tamezret stands at about 480 metres on one of the highest hills of the Matmata range, some ten kilometres west of Matmata, built of stone in terraces around a mosque, and unlike most of the region it is a village where the Amazigh language is still in everyday use rather than a remembered one. A small private museum in an old house holds domestic objects, tools and photographs of village life, and a cafe on the height serves tea with almonds and looks out over the surrounding hills and the plain beyond.

What to look for

• The stone village - terraced houses built of local stone around the mosque.
• The Amazigh language - still spoken in daily use, unusual in the region.
• The village museum - a private collection of domestic objects and photographs.
• The hilltop cafe - the terrace looking out over the hills and plain.

When to go

October to April is comfortable; summer is very hot. Late afternoon is best for the light and the view. The museum has irregular hours.

Before you go

The village is small and an hour or two covers it. The museum opening depends on its owner. Facilities are limited to the cafe.
