Vogan Friday Market

Every Friday, Vogan becomes the southeast's centre of gravity: one of Togo's largest weekly markets floods the town with traders from across the Maritime region and over the Benin border - pyramids of chillies and tomatoes, calabashes of red palm oil, smoked fish stacked like roof tiles, cloth walls of wax prints, pottery rows, livestock corners and the herbalists' quarter where vodun's pharmacopoeia trades in barks, herbs and stranger stock. It is commerce as festival, best worked slowly with small notes and open curiosity, and it pairs with Togoville and Lake Togo for the classic day inland from the coast.
