Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep has watched over Chiang Mai since 1383, when - the chronicle says - a white elephant carrying a relic of the Buddha climbed the mountain, trumpeted three times and died on the spot where King Kuena raised the first chedi. The temple grew into the north's holiest: a gold-plated chedi blazing on its mountain terrace, reached by a staircase of 306 steps flanked by sweeping naga balustrades - or by funicular for the merciful. Pilgrims circle the chedi with lotus buds, bells line the cloisters for children to ring, and the terrace balcony serves the classic view of Chiang Mai's grid shimmering on the plain below. Dawn brings monks' chanting and cool light; evenings turn the gold molten. Red songthaews shuttle the winding road from the city all day, and the climb itself remains a small rite of passage.
