Ko Mak

Ko Mak is unusual among Thai islands in being flat and in being privately held: most of the land belongs to a small number of families descended from an early twentieth-century settler, and the plantations of coconut and rubber they planted still cover much of it. That ownership pattern has shaped what happened next - the families have largely resisted large-scale resort development, and there is no high-rise, no chain hotel and no bar strip. The island is small enough to cycle across in half an hour on flat concrete lanes, and bicycles and small motorbikes are the transport. Beaches are on the west and south, shallow and calm. A local low-carbon tourism initiative has pushed against plastic and heavy development. From May to October boat services reduce sharply and much of the island closes. There is limited medical provision and no hospital, and the nearest is on the mainland.

When to go

November to April. Boat services thin out and much closes from May to October. Bring cash - bank machines are few and card acceptance patchy.

Honest expectations

Very quiet, with limited nightlife or dining variety - that is the point but it does not suit everyone. Low-season closures are extensive. No hospital; serious medical issues mean the mainland. Shallow water means poor swimming at low tide on some beaches.
