Khung Wiman is on the stretch of eastern seaboard between Rayong and Trat that the Chaloem Burapha Chonlathit road runs along - a coastal route built to open up a shoreline that had been bypassed, and one of the more pleasant drives in the region. The beach itself is a couple of kilometres of sand backed by casuarina trees, with a reddish-brown colour from the local sediment rather than the white of the Andaman coast, and it is shallow and calm. What it does not have is development: a handful of small resorts, some seafood restaurants and very little else, which is why Thai visitors from Bangkok use it as a quiet weekend beach. There is a viewpoint on the headland and mangrove areas nearby. The water is shallow a long way out, which makes swimming poor at low tide, and the sand is not the postcard white that visitors coming from the southern islands expect.

What you actually see

  • The casuarina beach - a couple of kilometres of quiet reddish sand.
  • The coastal road - the Chaloem Burapha route linking the eastern shoreline.
  • The low development - a few small resorts and seafood restaurants.
  • The headland viewpoint - over the bay at the end of the beach.

When to go

November to April. May to October brings rain and rougher water. Weekends bring Bangkok visitors; weekdays are close to empty.

Honest expectations

The sand is reddish-brown, not white, and the water is shallow far out - swimming is poor at low tide. Very little to do beyond the beach and eating. Facilities are limited.

Nearby

Chanthaburi town is north; the coastal road continues toward Rayong and Trat.
