- Tanzanite certificates matter enormously - heat-treated (standard) vs simulants (common at tourist stalls); independent labs settle it.
- Mpingo (African blackwood) carvings are fine from legal stocks but some countries scrutinise dark hardwoods - buy from cooperatives with receipts.
- Seashells, coral and turtle products from Zanzibar stalls are protected - the spice packets are the legal island.
