Materuni Waterfall

Materuni village sits on Kilimanjaro's southern slopes above Moshi, and the walk from it drops into a forested gully where a single fall of around eighty metres comes down a rock wall into a cold pool. The path passes through banana and coffee gardens the whole way, and most visits are sold as a package that includes a coffee demonstration in the village: picking, pulping, drying, roasting over a fire and pounding in a wooden mortar with a song.

When to go

June to October for the driest walking; the path is very muddy in the rains. The flow is strongest after the rains from April to June. Mornings are clearest.

Honest expectations

The path is steep, muddy and slippery in places and proper footwear matters. Guide fees, village fees and the coffee demonstration are charged separately and add up. The pool water is very cold.
