Sixty Stone Mountain

Daylilies are grown here as a crop, the buds picked and dried for cooking, and the hillside terraces above Fuli were planted with them by veterans resettled after the war. For a few weeks in August and September the flowers are left to open rather than picked and the whole slope turns orange, which is when the visitors come. Pavilions along the ridge road give the viewpoints, with the rift valley below and the Coastal Range beyond.

When to go

August and September are the flowering and the only time the hillside is orange; the exact weeks move with the weather. A shuttle runs in peak season because the road cannot take the traffic. Outside the window the terraces are green.

Things to know

The flowering window is short and easy to miss. In peak season the road is closed to private cars and the shuttle queues are long. The flowers are a crop and picking them is not on.
