Manyueyuan sits at around three hundred to seven hundred metres in the hills behind Sanxia, planted with Japanese cedar in the colonial period and now a recreation area with a network of paths climbing to two waterfalls, a suspension bridge and viewpoints. It is one of the closest maple spots to Taipei and turns in December, later than the mountains. Butterflies are abundant in spring and the streams run clear.

When to go
March to May brings butterflies and clear streams; November and December bring the maples. Weekends in maple season are extremely crowded and entry is capped. Summer is hot and humid.
Honest expectations
Entry numbers are capped at peak times and the car park fills early. The climbs are steep and stepped. Rain is frequent and the paths are slippery.
