Dahu grows the great majority of Taiwan's strawberries, planted on terraces up the valley sides and picked from December through to April, which is winter here and exactly when the crop wants cool nights. Farms sell picking by weight and hand out baskets, and the town sells everything else strawberry-related: jam, wine, sausages, hotpot and cake. It is a family outing more than a food pilgrimage and it is enormously popular.

When to go
December to April is the season, peaking in January and February. Weekends in peak season are extremely crowded and the highway backs up. Outside the season there is nothing to pick.
Honest expectations
Outside December to April there are no strawberries and the town is ordinary. Weekend traffic on Highway 3 is severe. Picking is charged by weight and works out expensive.
