Changhua Roundhouse

The Changhua roundhouse was built in 1922 with six stalls, enlarged to twelve by 1933, arranged in a fan around a turntable, and unlike every other example in Taiwan it has never stopped working: locomotives still come in for servicing and the turntable still turns to line them up. Steam locomotives kept for heritage runs are stabled here alongside working diesels. Visitors sign in at the gate and watch from a marked area beside the turntable.

When to go

Year round; the depot opens to visitors on a daily schedule and closes on Mondays. Turntable movements happen through the day but not to a timetable. Mornings are usually more active.

What to expect

It is a working depot, so visitors are confined to a viewing area and movements are not scheduled for them. There may be nothing turning when you arrive. Registration at the gate is required.
