Braunwald sits at about thirteen hundred metres on a shelf above Linthal, facing south across the Glarus valley to the Toedi massif, and no road climbs to it - the funicular built in 1907 is the only way up, and everything from luggage to building material goes with it. That has kept the village small and quiet, with electric carts and sledges doing the moving. It became known as a family resort and for the Musikwoche, a chamber music week held in a hall on the terrace. Above the village the Grotzenbuel and Gumen lifts open walking country under the Ortstock, and the Bergsturz landscape and the Toedi are visible across the valley.

Honest expectations
The funicular stops in the evening and between seasons - plan around its timetable. The village is small with few shops. Costs reflect lift-only supply. The terrace is in cloud on many days.
