Agerisee

The Agerisee lies at about seven hundred and twenty metres in a basin east of Zug, and because it is fed largely by its own catchment and sits above the plateau haze it is one of the cleaner and warmer swimming lakes in central Switzerland - the water reaches comfortable temperatures by midsummer and the lidos at Unteraegeri and Oberaegeri are busy from June. A path and cycle route run right round the shore, about fourteen kilometres, mostly flat and easy. Sailing and rowing clubs use the lake and there is a passenger boat in season. The battle of Morgarten was fought on the shore at the southern end in 1315. Since 1992 the lake has also served as a water reservoir.

May to September. A day for the circuit and a swim.

Practical notes

It fills with local traffic on hot weekends and lido parking is scarce. The shore path is close to the road in places. There are no mountains directly on the lake - this is prealpine, not alpine. Out of season much of it closes.
