Agerisee

A quiet prealpine lake above Zug, warm enough to swim in and small enough to walk around in a day.

The Agerisee lies at about seven hundred and twenty metres in a basin east of Zug, and because it is fed largely by its own catchment and sits above the plateau haze it is one of the cleaner and warmer swimming lakes in central Switzerland - the water reaches comfortable temperatures by midsummer and the lidos at Unteraegeri and Oberaegeri are busy from June. A path and cycle route run right round the shore, about fourteen kilometres, mostly flat and easy. Sailing and rowing clubs use the lake and there is a passenger boat in season. The Morgarten site at the southern end is a battlefield of 1315 and is left out of the description here by choice; the lake itself is the reason to come.

What you actually see

  • Warm swimming water - among the more comfortable lakes in central Switzerland.
  • A 14-kilometre shore circuit - flat walking and cycling right round.
  • Two lidos - at Unteraegeri and Oberaegeri.
  • Sailing and a passenger boat - the summer traffic on the water.

When to go

May to September. A day for the circuit and a swim.

Honest expectations

It fills with local traffic on hot weekends and lido parking is scarce. The shore path is close to the road in places. There are no mountains directly on the lake - this is prealpine, not alpine. Out of season much of it closes.

Nearby

Zug and its old town are west; the Mythen are south-east.
