Ystad

Ystad has one of the largest concentrations of half-timbered houses in Sweden, several hundred of them, along streets that kept their medieval lines - Stora Norregatan and the lanes off it are the densest stretch. Sankta Maria church stands on the square and the Greyfriars monastery, founded in 1267 and among the best preserved medieval monastic buildings in the country, holds the town museum. A watchman still calls the hours from the church tower through the night, a custom kept up for centuries. Henning Mankell set the Wallander novels here, which brings a steady flow of visitors to locations round the town and the surrounding coast.

Things to know

The ferry port traffic passes through the centre. Many houses are private. Summer weekends are busy. The Wallander connection is more marketing than substance in places.
