Kabalebo

Kabalebo sits on a river in western Suriname with no road to it, reached by a small plane onto a grass strip and surrounded on every side by unbroken rainforest. Trails run out from the lodge to inselbergs, creeks and a viewpoint, and the fishing on the river is the other reason people come. Tapir, jaguar and giant otter are in the area, though the forest keeps most of it out of sight.

• The river - the Kabalebo, fished and travelled by boat from the lodge.
• The inselberg trails - walks out to granite domes above the canopy.
• The wildlife - tapir, jaguar and giant otter in the surrounding forest.

When to go

The dry seasons, February to April and August to November, are best for trails and fishing. Rains make the walking heavy. Flights are weather-dependent in any season.

Honest expectations

Access is by charter flight only and packages are expensive. Big animals are rarely seen; the experience is forest, river and sound. Insects are constant.
