The Commewijne Plantation Loop

Across the river from Paramaribo, the Commewijne district preserves the plantation landscape that built colonial Suriname - and the classic way through it is by bicycle off the little ferry: flat polder lanes running dyke-top between old coffee and sugar estates, some ruined romantically (Peperpot's overgrown sheds), some restored (Frederiksdorp's brick ensemble, now a hotel-museum), past Javanese villages whose warungs serve the district's celebrated saoto soup. The river mouths add their own show - Guiana dolphins hunting the brackish confluence on the boat legs - and Nieuw Amsterdam's star fort museum anchors the history at the rivers' meeting.

The drier months keep the lanes firm and the cycling sweat merely tropical; mornings beat the heat, and dolphin sightings favour the moving tides. Sundays fill the warungs with Paramaribo families.

Distances add up in the heat - the full loop is a real day's pedalling; boats-plus-selected-stops suits the less committed. Plantation history here includes slavery and indenture, and the better sites address it - visit with that weight in mind. Mosquitoes rule the dusk hour.
