The classic buys
Saffron and smoked paprika
La Mancha saffron in threads (never powder - it hides filler) and pimenton de la Vera in the square tins from any grocer.
Ceramics and azulejos
Talavera and Andalusian pottery, hand-painted tiles from Seville and Granada - workshops sell seconds cheaply.
Espadrilles and leather
Rope-soled espadrilles from old-town makers, and Ubrique leather goods - feel the edges: folded and stitched beats glued.
Jamon and cheese, vacuum-packed
Any decent charcuteria vacuum-seals for travel - manchego and cured ham survive a flight home where allowed.
Turron and olive oil
Jijona turron year-round from good grocers, and single-estate olive oil in tins - tins fly better than glass.
Fans and guitars
A painted abanico from a specialist fan shop, or - the serious buy - a luthier-made guitar from Granada or Madrid.
Check before you buy
- Meat and dairy cannot enter many countries outside the EU - check your home country's food import rules before stocking up.
- Anything archaeological-looking, however small, needs paperwork - Spain protects its heritage strictly.
- Duty-free alcohol allowances are per person and lower than a rioja habit - check yours.
✗ Better left behind
- Sombreros and 'flamenco' dresses from souvenir chains - made elsewhere; a fan or shawl from a specialist is the real version.
- Sea-turtle shell or coral jewellery offered in coastal stalls - protected species, restricted trade.
Markets shift, workshops close and open, and the best souvenir is still the one with a story you were there for. Buy from makers where you can, keep receipts for anything substantial, and when a deal feels too good, it usually is.
