Puy du Fou opened in Spain in 2021, following the French original, and it inverts the theme park model: there are no rides at all, only live shows staged in purpose-built arenas with large casts, trained horses, birds of prey, pyrotechnics and mechanical stage effects. The programme covers episodes from Spanish history, from Visigothic and Muslim Spain to the Reconquest, the age of discovery and the twentieth century. The centrepiece is El Sueno de Toledo, a night show lasting over an hour with a cast of several hundred, staged on a vast open arena with a lake, moving structures and projections. Villages of period buildings connect the arenas, with craftspeople and food.

What you actually see

  • El Sueno de Toledo - a night show with hundreds of performers.
  • The daytime shows - falconry, cavalry and historical episodes in arenas.
  • The period villages - reconstructed streets between the venues.
  • The absence of rides - a park built entirely on live performance.

When to go

April to June and September to October for the fullest programme in comfortable weather; the park closes for much of the winter and the Toledo summer is extremely hot. Shows run to a timetable and planning the day around it is necessary.

Honest expectations

Everything is in Spanish, with audio translation devices available but imperfect. Show times are fixed and popular ones fill, so arriving early matters. The night show is a separate ticket in some packages and finishes late.

Nearby

Toledo's old town is a few kilometres away; Madrid lies seventy kilometres north.
