La Pedriza

La Pedriza is a granite massif within the Sierra de Guadarrama national park where weathering has worked the rock into rounded domes, stacked blocks, slabs and labyrinths of boulders, giving names to formations across the area and making it one of the most important climbing and scrambling grounds in central Spain, with around a thousand routes. The Yelmo, a great dome of 1,719 metres visible from far off, is the landmark, though the highest point is Las Torres at 2,029 metres; the whole area covers about 32 square kilometres. It also holds a Spanish imperial eagle population and the largest griffon vulture colony in the Madrid region, over a hundred pairs. Access by car is capped at a daily number of vehicles because of pressure from Madrid; once the quota fills the road closes and visitors must walk in from Manzanares el Real.

When to go

Spring and autumn for the best walking; summer brings extreme heat on exposed granite and severe fire restrictions. The vehicle quota fills by early morning on weekends and holidays, sometimes before eight.

Practical notes

The daily car quota is real and enforced, and arriving late means walking several kilometres in or turning back. There is no shade on the rock and no water on most routes. Scrambling here is easy to underestimate, and rescues are frequent.
