Wolmido Island

Wolmido stopped being an island when a causeway joined it to Incheon, and what it is now is a working harbour promontory with a seafront strip: an amusement park of deliberately old-fashioned rides - the Disco Pang Pang, a viking ship, a drop tower - a boardwalk along the water, raw-fish restaurants, and stalls selling clams and grilled shellfish. It has been a day-trip destination for Seoul since the colonial period and the atmosphere is closer to a faded seaside resort than to a modern attraction, which for many visitors is the appeal. The Wolmi Sea Train, an elevated loop line that took years to open, runs around the district and gives views over the port. Sunset over the water and the container terminals is the thing to time it for. Weekends are loud and crowded with families.

When to go

April to June and September to November, timed for sunset. Weekends are packed; weekday evenings are calmer. Winter is cold and windy on the front.

Things to know

It is faded and a bit tatty, which is either the charm or the problem. Rides and the Sea Train are ticketed separately. The seafood stalls are tourist-priced - check before ordering.
