Phansi Museum

Phansi means below, and the museum began in the basement of a Victorian house in Glenwood before spreading through it. The collection is one of the strongest holdings of southern African material culture in private hands: Zulu beadwork in depth, headrests, staffs, snuff containers, wire baskets, ceremonial dress and a large group of izinkonjane - ceremonial puppets - displayed together in a room that is the museum's signature image. Objects are explained rather than simply arranged; the guides know the meanings behind bead colours, the regional differences in headrest carving, and the household use of things that look decorative. Visits are by appointment with a guide, which keeps groups small and makes it a slower, more explained experience than a walk-through museum. It is a short drive from central Durban in a residential suburb, and the house itself is worth attention.

Honest expectations

You cannot simply arrive - visits are by appointment and the museum is closed without one. It is in a residential house, so space is tight and large groups do not fit. Durban's humidity makes summer visits sticky.
