The Oranjezicht City Farm began in 2013 as a volunteer project turning a disused bowling green on the mountain slopes above Cape Town back into a market garden, on land that had been farmed in the eighteenth century. The market grew out of it as an outlet for the produce and for small Western Cape growers, and it moved down to Granger Bay beside the Waterfront, where it now runs on weekends in a large open shed with the sea on one side. It is closer to an actual farmers market than most - vegetables, fruit, eggs, bread, cheese and flowers from named farms, alongside the prepared food and coffee that fills the tables. The farm itself, up in Oranjezicht, is still worked by volunteers and is open during the week; visiting both makes the market make sense.

What you actually see

  • Named growers - produce traceable to specific Western Cape farms.
  • The Granger Bay shed - an open market building with the sea beside it.
  • The original farm - a volunteer-worked garden up on the mountain slopes.
  • Weekend only - Saturdays and Sundays, closed the rest of the week.

When to go

Saturday or Sunday morning, early. Two to three hours.

Honest expectations

It is busy from mid-morning and parking is difficult. Prices are noticeably above supermarket. Seating fills fast and much of it is standing. Wind at Granger Bay can be severe.

Nearby

The V&A Waterfront is next door; the farm itself is up in Oranjezicht.
