Maboneng - place of light - was assembled from about 2008 when a developer began buying disused industrial buildings on the eastern edge of the Johannesburg CBD and converting them into apartments, studios, galleries, restaurants and a Sunday market at Arts on Main. For several years it was the emblem of inner-city regeneration in South Africa, and it drew people back to a downtown that middle-class Johannesburg had abandoned in the 1990s. It has also become the standard example in the argument about how such regeneration works: rents rose, existing residents in surrounding buildings were displaced, the developer's company went into business rescue in 2019, and parts of the precinct emptied out before stabilising. What is there now is smaller than at its peak but real - galleries, the market, restaurants, murals - and the honest recommendation is to go on a Sunday and go with local guidance.

What you actually see

  • The warehouse conversions - industrial buildings turned into studios, lofts and galleries.
  • The Sunday market - Arts on Main, the precinct's busiest and best day.
  • The regeneration argument - rising rents and displacement alongside the revival.
  • The contraction - a precinct smaller than at its peak after the developer's collapse.

When to go

Sunday for the market. Half a day. Weekdays are much quieter and some venues are closed.

Honest expectations

The surrounding blocks require care - drive in, park securely and do not wander outside the precinct without local guidance. It is smaller and quieter than its reputation suggests. Some businesses that made its name have closed.

Nearby

Victoria Yards is east; the Johannesburg CBD is west.
