Jonkershoek Nature Reserve
A steep-sided mountain valley behind Stellenbosch with a circular drive, waterfalls and a century of forestry research.

Jonkershoek is a horseshoe valley closed at the head by high peaks, with the Eerste River running out of it towards Stellenbosch. A one-way circular road of about ten kilometres loops through the valley floor - drivable, cyclable or walkable - and hiking paths climb from it: the Panorama route around the rim, and shorter walks to waterfalls in the side kloofs. The valley has a scientific history that outlasts most reserves: catchment experiments started here in the 1930s measured how pine plantations affect streamflow, and the results shaped water policy across the country. Those pines have largely been removed to let fynbos return. The mountains are steep enough that the valley is in shadow early, and after the 2015 and 2019 fires the slopes carry visible bands of regrowth. Daily entry is capped and weekends book out.
What you actually see
- The circular road - a one-way ten-kilometre loop through the valley floor.
- The catchment experiments - 1930s research plots that changed national water policy.
- The waterfall walks - short climbs into side kloofs off the loop.
- The fire regrowth - fynbos returning where pine plantations were removed.
When to go
September to November for flowers; autumn for clear air. Half a day. Book ahead - daily numbers are capped.
Honest expectations
Entry is capped and weekend slots go early. Gate hours are enforced and cars get locked in. Paths above the valley are steep with no shade. Sections close after fires and in high fire danger. Popular with trail runners and cyclists, so the loop road is busy.
Nearby
Stellenbosch and its wine farms are below; Assegaaibosch adjoins the reserve.
