Hermanus and the Whale Coast

Hermanus, on Walker Bay east of Cape Town, is celebrated as one of the finest places on earth to watch whales from the shore, because each year between roughly June and November southern right whales migrate up from the Antarctic to calve and mate in the sheltered bay, often coming so close to the cliffs that you can watch them breach, lob-tail and nurse their calves without ever leaving dry land. A cliff-top path runs for kilometres along the town's edge, giving a free grandstand, and in season a whale crier walks the front sounding a kelp horn to announce where the whales are. The town builds a whale festival around the peak, and boat trips offer closer encounters for those who want them. Beyond the whales, Hermanus has beaches, a lagoon, and nearby wine estates in the cool Hemel-en-Aarde valley, making it a rewarding coastal base.

The whales are seasonal, so a visit outside roughly June to November will not see them at all, which disappoints those who come unaware. Even in season, sightings depend on the day, though the peak weeks are reliable. Boat trips get closer but are weather-dependent and an added cost when the free cliff path is often superb. The town is busy during the whale festival.
