Darling sits in wheat and dairy country an hour from Cape Town, and it has two reasons for its visitors. In August and September the surrounding renosterveld reserves - Tienie Versfeld, Waylands, Contreberg - flower with bulbs and annuals, and the village runs a wildflower show that has been held since 1917. The other is Evita se Perron, the old railway station converted by Pieter-Dirk Uys into a theatre where he performs as Evita Bezuidenhout, a satirical character he has used to comment on South African politics since the 1980s; the venue includes a garden of discarded apartheid-era statues arranged with deliberate irony. Between the two there is a small museum, several restaurants, an olive and wine scene along the road, and Darling Brew nearby. It works as a day trip from Cape Town in flower season and a quiet village the rest of the year.

What you actually see

  • The flower reserves - renosterveld patches flowering with bulbs in August and September.
  • The 1917 flower show - a village event running for more than a century.
  • Evita se Perron - a station turned satirical theatre with a garden of discarded statues.
  • The wine and olive road - farms along the routes into the village.

When to go

August and September for flowers; shows run at weekends year-round. A day.

Honest expectations

Flowers depend entirely on winter rain and fail in dry years. Theatre performances are mostly in Afrikaans and English mixed, and the satire assumes local political knowledge. The village is very quiet outside flower season and weekends.

Nearby

West Coast National Park is north; Yzerfontein is on the coast.
