Sneznik Castle

Snežnik castle sits on the flat floor of the Loška dolina behind a water-filled moat, a compact whitewashed block rather than a hilltop fortress. What makes it unusual in Slovenia is that its contents survived: the Schönburg-Waldenburg family used it as a hunting lodge until 1945 and the interiors were nationalised with the furniture, hunting trophies, stoves, books and fittings still in place, so the rooms are shown as they were used rather than as a museum arrangement.

History

The castle is first attested in 1269 through its owner Meinhard von Schneberg, who held it for the Patriarchate of Aquileia. The Lichtenberg family took over the estate in 1707 and joined it to the lordship of Lož in 1718, and from 1859 Prince Jurij of Schönburg-Waldenburg remodelled it as a summer home and hunting lodge, adding a storey, two turrets and an English-style park (Wikipedia, Snežnik Castle).

When to go

Year round, but tours run at fixed times and are far fewer outside summer; winter may mean weekends only. Spring and autumn are quietest. The park around it is open when the castle is not.

Entry is by guided tour only and turning up between times means waiting. Tours may be in Slovene with a printed English text rather than an English guide. The castle is small and the visit short.
