The museum at Rogatec was built around one farm that stayed where it was, the Ojstriski homestead of 1930, and grew by moving in buildings from around the Styrian countryside: a hayrack, a smithy, a bread oven, a wine press, a beekeeping house, a school, a shop and a chapel, arranged as a village. It is generally called the largest open-air museum in Slovenia. Crafts are demonstrated through the season, with smiths, potters and bakers working the buildings rather than simply showing them.

When to go
April to October; the museum closes for winter and craft demonstrations run mainly at weekends and events. Summer is the fullest programme. Weekdays out of season can be quiet with nothing working.
Honest expectations
Craft demonstrations are not run every day and a weekday visit may find only empty buildings. Interpretation is largely in Slovene. The site is open air with little shelter in rain.
