Bogojina Church

Jože Plečnik rebuilt the church at Bogojina between 1925 and 1927, keeping the old nave and turning the whole building through ninety degrees, and he made it out of what the region had: black oak from the marshes, local brick, and Prekmurje pottery. The flat wooden ceiling is studded with glazed ceramic bowls and plates of the kind made at nearby Filovci, arranged in patterns, and a round tower stands beside the entrance. It is the best known of his works outside Ljubljana.

When to go

Year round; the church is usually open in daylight hours but may be locked outside service times. Bright days show the ceiling best. Sunday services fill it.

Honest expectations

The church may be locked and finding the keyholder in the village takes effort. The interior is dim and the ceiling detail is hard to photograph. The village has almost no facilities.
