Smolenice Castle

A castle has stood above Smolenice since the fifteenth century, guarding a Little Carpathian pass, and it was a ruin by the nineteenth. Count József Pálffy had it rebuilt in the twentieth century in a romantic medieval style, with turrets, a tall tower and a courtyard, and the work was finished only in the 1950s. It belongs to the Slovak Academy of Sciences and works as a conference centre, so access to the interior is limited and seasonal.

History

The castle was built in the 15th century and fell into ruin; Count János Pálffy inherited it in 1777 but lacked the money to rebuild it, and it was rebuilt only in the 20th century for Count József Pálffy to designs by Jozef Hubert, using Kreuzenstein as a model. Since 26 June 1953 it has belonged to the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Wikipedia, Smolenice Castle).

• The courtyard - the enclosed yard at the centre of the complex.
• The park - grounds running down the slope below the walls.
• The Little Carpathian forest - beech woods behind the castle.

When to go

April to October is when tours are most likely to run. Access depends on the conference schedule and is not guaranteed; checking ahead is necessary. The grounds are more reliably open than the interior.

What to expect

The building is a conference centre and the interior is often closed with no notice. What stands is a twentieth-century reconstruction, not a medieval castle. Parking in the village is limited.
