Kebaya

The kebaya is a fitted open-front blouse fastened with a brooch chain rather than buttons, worn with a sarong, and it has been worn across the Malay world for centuries in forms that differ by community: the Peranakan kebaya nyonya with its dense sulam embroidery of flowers and birds cut through the fabric, the plainer Malay kebaya labuh, and others. In 2024 Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Thailand had it inscribed jointly on the Representative List.

When to go

Year round; the Peranakan Museum keeps daily hours. Commissions from a tailor take weeks. Hari Raya and Peranakan events are when it is most visible in the street.

Practical notes

A hand-embroidered kebaya takes weeks of work and costs accordingly; machine-made versions are widely sold and are not the same thing. The multinational inscription covers five countries and the Singapore form is one of several. Museum displays are static and the living practice is with the tailors.
