๐Ÿ›๏ธ Sierra Leone: souvenirs

Freetown's craft benches sell country cloth, carving and the batiks of a creative coast - with diamonds strictly a licensed business. Here is what travellers bring home from Sierra Leone, where the good versions live, and the export questions worth a look - alongside our 30 written places.

๐Ÿ“‹ A reading guide, not customs advice. Export and import rules change and differ by route - what leaves easily from Sierra Leone may still be limited into your home country. Before buying anything valuable, old-looking, animal- or plant-derived, check the official customs pages on both ends. That five-minute read has saved a lot of airport heartbreak.

๐Ÿ›’ The classic buys

Country cloth and gara

Handwoven cotton strips and indigo gara tie-dye - the national textiles; Freetown's big market sells lengths and gowns.

Wood carving

Masks and figures from Mende and Temne traditions - new work from the craft markets on Lumley Road.

Basketry

Shukublai baskets in tight coils - practical village craft.

Cocoa, coffee and ginger products

The provinces grow all three - local processors bag and jar them.

โš ๏ธ Check before you buy

  • Diamonds are licensed trade only - buying stones outside certified dealers is illegal; if you are not in the trade, do not buy stones at all.
  • Old ritual items - Sande society masks - are cultural property; buy new carvings.

โœ— Better left behind

  • Any diamond offered informally - illegal and near-certainly worthless.
  • Wildlife products - protected.

Markets shift, workshops close and open, and the best souvenir is still the one with a story you were there for. Buy from makers where you can, keep receipts for anything substantial, and when a deal feels too good, it usually is.
