Kalenić Monastery

Kalenić was built around 1407 to 1413 for the protovestiarios Bogdan and is usually taken as the culmination of the Morava school: the trefoil church is faced in alternating courses of stone and brick with a density of carved ornament that exceeds the earlier foundations, with rosettes, twin windows, foliage, animals and figures worked into the frames, including an often-noted scene of a wedding feast. The frescoes inside date from the same campaign and include a well-preserved Wedding at Cana. The monastery sits in a fold of low hills with orchards around it and sees relatively few visitors, being off the main routes. A small community maintains it. For anyone following the Morava-school churches, this is the one that repays the closest looking at the stonework.

When to go

April to October for the surroundings; the church is open year round with shorter winter access. Mornings are quiet. Feast days bring larger numbers.

Practical notes

The monastery is remote and needs a car; public transport to Rekovac is limited and nothing runs to the site. Photography inside is normally forbidden. There is minimal interpretation. The church is small and the visit brief, so it works as part of a monastery circuit.
