Jabal Al-Qarah

Jabal Al-Qarah rises out of the palm gardens of Al-Ahsa, a hill of soft limestone and marl weathered into a maze of tall narrow clefts and caves, and the thing everyone comes for is the temperature: the passages hold a stable coolness through the year while the oasis outside can pass fifty degrees, a difference of many degrees that made them a refuge for local people long before they became a visitor attraction. A visitor centre and lit walkways have been built through the main passages. Pottery has been made from the hill's clay in the nearby village for generations, and workshops sell it. The hill stands within the Al-Ahsa oasis World Heritage landscape.

When to go

November to March for the approach and the surrounding oasis, though the caves themselves are most striking in summer precisely because of the contrast with outside. Mornings avoid the crowds. Weekends are busy.
