Dumat al-Jandal

Dumat al-Jandal appears in Assyrian records as Adummatu, a caravan oasis and the seat of Arab queens who dealt with Nineveh, and it remained a station on the routes between Syria, Mesopotamia and the Arabian interior. Marid castle stands on a rise above the oasis, a mud and stone fort with round towers, its foundations early and the visible structure much later. Below it is the Omar bin al-Khattab mosque with a tall square stone minaret, one of the earliest surviving mosque structures in the region by tradition, and around them the ruined stone and mud houses of the old quarter, Al-Dira, with lanes running between them. Date gardens fill the valley floor.

History

In 2020 archaeologists reported a 35-meter triangular stone platform of the 6th millennium BCE, and Assyrian inscriptions of 845 BCE name the city Adummatu, capital of an Arab kingdom ruled at times by queens such as Zabibe. Excavations in 2011 uncovered a Nabataean open-air banqueting hall used from the late 1st century BC, and in AD 106 the town was taken into the Roman Empire (Wikipedia, Dumat al-Jandal).

When to go

November to March; Al-Jouf summers are severe and winter nights cold. Mornings are best for the old quarter. The site keeps daytime hours with a midday break.

Practical notes

Much of the old quarter is ruined and access is restricted in places. The mosque may be closed to non-Muslims depending on who is present. Restoration has been uneven. Interpretation is mainly in Arabic.
