Georgetown was the island's second town and the centre of the sugar industry on the windward side, and when the Mount Bentinck factory closed in the 1980s the trade that supported it went with it. What remains is a quiet grid of streets, some substantial older buildings in varying repair, and a position that makes it the last town before the Rabacca crossing and the northern route to the volcano.

What you actually see

  • The old street grid - the town laid out for the sugar trade.
  • The factory remains - the Mount Bentinck works that closed in the 1980s.
  • The windward setting - the Atlantic coast the town sits on.
  • The northern route - the last town before the Rabacca crossing and the volcano.

When to go

December to May is the dry season. The town is quiet at any time. The volcano route north starts from here.

Honest expectations

The town has little for visitors and an hour covers it. The 2021 eruption affected the whole northeastern part of the island. Facilities are basic.

Nearby

Rabacca Dry River is north, and Black Point is south.
